Women's Rights

Women's Rights

Eve Teasing

Whether it's whistling, name calling or some lewd comment by a passerby at the train station or on the road, eve teasing is more than just an irritant. Most men and even women dismiss it as one of those "hota hai" issues wherein ignoring him is usually prescribed as the best solution. But the truth is, eve teasing is a form of sexual harassment which often leads to young women skipping school, lower self worth & overall depression.

Rape

Imagine an India where every hour, three women are raped. Does this strike you as the image of a superpower?! Shamefully, that's the India we live in today. A country where instances of rape have escalated by 15% in the last 10 years and where one rape is reported every 10 minutes!

Domestic Violence

2 out of 3 married women in India are subjected to some form of domestic violence - emotional, physical or sexual. Violence has become a tool used by insecure husbands & in-laws to silence the rights of the woman.

Abuse at the workplace

Women in India often suffer abuse at their workplace in subtle yet disturbing ways. The boss who wants her to entertain clients, or the colleagues who pass lewd glances every time she passes are everyday occurrences in many workplaces in India. It's not just sexual, it's also about power. Inequality begins right from hiring practices all the way to the battle for a seat in the boardroom.

Lack of Respect

A society that turns a blind eye to the disrespect of women can hardly call itself civilized. Do we really want shameful titles like New Delhi being branded the rape capital of South Asia? When we ignore the seemingly small issues like eve teasing, we don't realize that it could easily balloon into more cases of rape, violence & abuse.

Gender Bias

It's true that we have come a long way from the dark ages when women weren't even considered fit for an education. Yet, look around you and you will see rampant inequality everywhere. At the workplace, at home, in public life, you will find people choosing the boy over the girl. If we don't fight for equal rights today, we're going to be facing very strict lines that define gender bias tomorrow and is that really the India you want to live in?

Weakened society

In most families women are primary care givers who greatly impact the emotional & mental makeup of the child. When women's rights are ignored, it affects the next generation. Deeply rooted discrimination against women in political, economic, social and cultural spheres weakens society as a whole

No Sense of Safety

Women need to feel safe within the country no matter what street they âre walking on, what they're wearing or who they're with. This can only happen once a majority of the population realizes this as an issue at hand and takes steps to make sure the required measures are taken.

Creating Awareness

Make a noise, shout it out or simply tell a friend. Only if people hear about it enough from their friends, from people they trust or in simple ways that they can understand, will things really change. Awareness is the first step towards positive action.

Putting Pressure on the Government

Better governance and laws are one of the best ways to ensure equal rights. It starts simply by asking questions. Why is the conviction for rape at a lowly 27 percent? What protection does the law offer women who suffer domestic violence? Ask a lot and ask them loud. Get your friends together and leverage the power of a crowd to make your questions & demands heard.

Teaching Respect

Next time you hear someone saying something demeaning to a woman, stand up and teach him some respect. Every human being deserves this and women are people too. The faster we realize this, the lesser the violations will be.

Volunteer

There are a number of groups that seek the support of volunteers that would actively participate to promote and fight for women's rights and causes. Getting in touch with these groups and volunteering with them will help us better comprehend the real state of the issue.

Help!

If you see someone who's being subject to eve teasing or abuse, make a noise, gather a crowd & take some action against the 'mawali'

Show your Support

If you know a victim of abuse offer a helping hand & empathize. Most often, all that victims want is a friend they can talk to.

A Movement for Change

If you feel very strongly about Women's Rights, get a group of like minded friends together & start a movement to bring about change.

Teach Respect

Teach people, friends & kids to respect women. It'll go a long way in deciding their attitude towards the female gender.

Think of merit, not of gender

No matter what organization you are in, support merit, not gender & encourage everyone around you to do that.
