Corruption

WHAT IS CORRUPTION?

Politicians & Babus

When you think of corruption, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? An image of a typical Indian politician who wants a baksheesh before he can do you a favor and the sarkari babu who’s under-the-table dhanda flourishes more than his constituency, right? As far these people are concerned, their personal gain and wealth wins over the betterment of the country. Did you know that only 5% of the government spending actually reaches the common man?

An ‘I don’t care’ attitude

Isn’t that what everyone’d mindset seems to be today? Obviously, if we think only of our own convenience and well being the babus and the politicians are going to take full advantage of that. This is what happens when we pay ‘hafta’ to get our driving license out of turn, bribe a traffic constable so that we don’t get fined and pay that extra ten thousand to get house papers. 90% of the country’s population believes that corruption is going to increase over the next 3 years but don’t realize that they are party to it!

Low awareness levels

I don’t know because I don’t want to know. Poor information breeds corrupt governance. Easy procedures like getting a passport or procuring get bogged down with give and take due to lack of knowledge. Rural people are suffering from low literacy and poverty and the urban citizen isn’t doing any better either. This is why 1/3 of the total Indian populace has made their peace with the fact that corruption is inevitable, because they don’t know any better.

Zero Transparency

Ever wondered why a particular road contract gets allocated to a particular vendor? Because the contractor pays money to the babu to ensure it does! Politicians incite vandalism and communal riots but never get indicted! Millions of us pay regular taxes but don’t have a clue why infrastructure doesn’t improve. Lack of transparency ensures ignorant public and wealthier netas. In fact, 62% of the public have paid a bribe to get a job done in a Government office.

Society for the privileged

Remember the time you got stuck in traffic for 2 hours because an MLA had to pass by, with his parade? The corrupt and the empowered ensure that this is a society of uneven privileges where power is contained in the hands of a few, thus causing ‘the rich to get better and the poor to get worse”! Unfortunately, we are living a society that’s dominated by class and power rather than by equality and merit.

A sinking economy

62 good years since independence and the per capita income has risen and so have the literacy levels, but why is the inflation at an all time high? When an economy is ruled by corrupt power, merit often takes a back seat to make way for inefficient entities. The facile success story of corporate embezzlers like Ramalinga Raju and modern day plunderers like Madhu Koda reflect the current state of affairs. As of last year, the amount of Indian black money in Swiss bank accounts amounts to 71, 34,400 Crores which is 4.36 times the country’s GDP and enough to pay our debt 13 times over!

Monitoring Government Expenditure

Get involved in local issues and get together to actively participate in raising awareness about common problems. As a group, we have more power to question our respective MLA’s and MP’s about the allocation of public funds. Demand better infrastructure and more amenities! Transparency can be only achieved through continuous monitoring and reforms. It is the duty of each of us to be the watchdog in our movement to weed out corruption.

Making Corruption Public

More power to all who have championed the cause of Right to Information (RTI)! Thanks to it, the general public is getting close to knowing about the degree of illegal wealth amassed by Supreme Court judges and lakhs spent by Chief Ministers to spruce up their homes. The citizens need to campaign for more such laws that can check corruption while the government needs to get it act together and provide more muscle to corruption enforcement agencies.

Using Education to Fight Corruption

Catch them young and teach them the sense of right and wrong! Education and information is the only way to fight this menace and students in schools and colleges need to be taught everything about the issue. Better education levels in the rural areas can ensure fair governance. Be inspired and inspire others because less of cynicism and more of idealism will go a long way!

Vote

Voting is your constitutional right so get informed, take responsibility and cast your vote. It's one way of ensuring your voice is heard.

Demand Accountability

In a democracy like India, the Government is responsible & accountable to its citizens. So more power to Right to Information Act, ask questions!

Refugee Review Tribunal AUSTRALIA RRT RESEARCH RESPONSE

The available information indicates that Chinese and other criminal gangs do operate in Malaysia, and that such organised crime operations do involve bribery and corruption of authorities. According to the sources consulted, these criminal gangs are involved in a number of illegal activities, including loan sharking. Loan sharking is an extremely large business, mainly targeting poorer groups, and has previously been tacitly allowed by the government. Despite recent attempts at a crackdown the practice continues.
