CHILD LABOUR

CHILD LABOUR
Child Labour is a very serious social problem in our city, in addition to poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and others. It is an evil prevailing in Indian Society for a long time. This problem has become a disgrace and shame for our society.
Small children are seen on roadside washing plates working in construction sites or cleaning the front yard of a house at a age when it is time for them to go to school and study. The perpetrator of child labour makes use of the legal loophole to practice it.
The government, in an effort, to stop child labour has implanted number of laws but the laws are more flouted than obeyed.
According to The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulations) Act, 1986 children below the age of 14 years are not allowed to work in any factory or karkhanas. The purpose of this Act was to declare Child Labour as illegal and it is a punishable by any citizen of India. The act is to bring the notice of the nation that there are child labour laws to protect the child. However, in spite of this the situation has not improved nor has it been brought under control. For that matter, it has worsened.
Child Labour in my city is as common as a red flag in the city. The condition of chidren in my city seems that the state governments does not consider child labour as a crime although knowing an act is also been passed against child labour. Children below the age of 14 years are seen in the street selling bangles, cigarettes, bidis and other tobacco products.
The above picture was clicked by me outside the Shree Ram Arcade, in near new market area, where one of the pictures shows how a 12 years old girl is selling cigarettes, bidis , pan parags and various tobacco products. This shows the “who cares?” attitude of state government where the crime is committed just beside police officer.
Experts blame the system, poverty, illiteracy, adult unemployment yet the fact is that the entire nation is responsible for every crime against children. Instead of nipping the problem at the bud the child labour is India is allowed to increase with each passing year.
We as future citizens should make an earnest effort along with the government to completely eradicate child labour and build a better India with a brighter future.
