Imagine what would happen if the roof of your house collapsed.
The Himalayas, also called the Roof of the World have a direct effect on climate in the Indian subcontinent. The mountains protect the area form a number of climatic forces such as wind and rain beside being the source of some major rivers such as the Ganges.
But this mighty Roof is diminishing bringing forth the danger of adverse effects on agriculture, property and human life. The latest IPCC report states “…glaciers in the Himalayas are receding faster than in any other part of the world, and if the present rate continues, the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high if the Earth keeps warming at the current rate.” (*TERI website) As a result of the melting glaciers, the sea level continues to rise in the surrounding areas harming both human and animal lives. Recent reports also revealed that the sacred shrine of Amarnath has decreased from a height of 12 feet to 10 feet in the last few years.
The consequences of these effects are far more devastating than we could possibly imagine as they bring about many unseen problems. All these problems will ultimately affect us directly for the Roof is melting right above our homes.
